Feeling overwhelmed?

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Phil 4.13

I don’t know if you’re like me, but sometimes I get massively overwhelmed by life.

Car rides for the kids, deadlines, illness, opportunities, problems in my heart, in my family, in the church. Yard work, house work, church work, repairs and improvements. Dreams, failures, longings, disappointments. This can all add up in my life, and it can be hard just to want to keep going. The pressure can be immense.

In the midst of mounting and sometimes insurmountable pressure, I am reminded that I am not alone.

I am reminded that I am not made to live life in my own strength, that I don’t have to, and that it is foolish to try. I am reminded that everything that Jesus supplies me is the strength for everything Jesus wants me to be, to become, and to accomplish. I am reminded that I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

I used to hear that verse wrongly as saying that anything I can dream up—even seemingly impossible things—Jesus will give me the help and strength to do. After study, I realized that this verse is saying so much more.

The apostle Paul is reminding us that no matter what circumstance we find ourselves in, whether it is prosperity or poverty, whether things are going my way or life is against me, Jesus will give me the strength to glorify God and become more like him in each and every circumstance.

I don’t know what’s in front of you today. But may God delightfully remind you, that you are not alone, and that Jesus’ strength is sufficient for you today.
