When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
In all human history there is only one man who was born to die: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus was born for a particular mission, to save his people from our sins. Jesus willingly was sent by God to ransom us back from slavery to sin and death. He did it by dying in our place. Jesus finished his mission. Jesus completed his task. Jesus succeed against all the temptations against all the opposition.
Our hearts are able to rest and rejoice in Jesus because he is the finisher of our faith. Jesus has completed his mission for us, and we are able to rest in what he has accomplished. We cannot save ourselves, we cannot make ourselves right with God. We cannot make up for our sins with a lot of good deeds. And the beautiful news is that we don’t have to. Jesus has done it for us.
Because Jesus has done it for us, our motivation for doing good has been transformed. No longer are we to give ourselves to try to earn favor with God. Because of Jesus’ success, we already have all the favor of God. So instead of doing good and obeying to try to get favor from God, we do good and obey, because we have the favor of God. Our motivation is to please the God, who loves us so sacrificially and powerfully!
As we meditate on the sufficient work of Jesus for us, may our hearts move to live for Jesus in all his ways as a response to his deep and powerful love for us!
We invite you to attend a worship service at FCC on Sundays at 9 and 11 am.
