Happy Wednesday, FCC!
If you have been memorizing the verses each week (see below), this week’s memory verse is one of my personal favorites, and is also the verse I taught the first Sunday that we went online-only in 2020, in response to the pandemic:
“For God did not give us a Spirit of fear, but of power, love and self-control."
(2 Timothy 1.7)
God has kindly and graciously made the truth of this verse real to me in this last year. Whenever I was tempted to live and make decisions out of fear (and there were plenty of opportunities for that!), this verse brought me back to center and directed my attention to God. He loves us and cares for us so much, that he did not want us to be alone, but gave us his Spirit--God’s Spirit is in us as a gift from Jesus!--so we can live with love, power, and self-control! What a gift!
This is good news every day, but especially today. In the traditional church calendar, today is Ash Wednesday, a day when Christians have traditionally remembered our mortality, in preparation for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. As we consider our frailty, our mortality, that our lives are but a mist (James 4.14), we also build our lives on the great truth--that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is in us through faith, and we have power today to love as Jesus loved. Because of Jesus, right now, in our frail bodies we have resurrection power residing in us. May we experience his power today to live with his love and his self-control!
IN THIS ISSUE:
This Sunday we introduce Rule #7 for living an inspired life: ”Do the Good You Know to Do.” We’ll see you in person and online!
2 Timothy 1:7 (Fear)
…for God gave us a Spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
