Happy New Year, FCC!  I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us for 2019!

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5.17

I love change, and I love newness. The change into a new year brings me so much joy as I consider and plan what new changes to make and what new goals to accomplish. Iuse a “Full Focus Planner” to keep track of my goals, my rhythms and my habits. I love filling it out and anticipating what is to come in the next year.

But as we plan out the new year, plan out new goals and anticipate the new opportunities in 2019, let’s remember to plan and resolve and seek new things out of our newness. What I mean is this: because of Jesus, and because of unity with Jesus by faith, we are already new. We are a new creation. This will get a little heady for a second, but what Paul means by being new creations in Christ is that the future resurrection power of Jesus has already changed us in the right now, present reality. Put another way, the future resurrection has already taken place in our hearts, if we are in Christ. You are already a new creation. You are already experiencing resurrection power right now, today, this moment in Christ. You have already been changed at your deepest core, because the Holy Spirit has made you new—at your deepest core.

What this means for planning the new year is that in Christ, you have already been permanently changed by God, and you can now make plans for growth and development because your heart has already been changed. Since our hearts are changed, all the other changes we make in life are just trying to catch the rest of our lives up to the change that God has already made in our lives. Make sense?

Let’s grow in prayer or discipline or fitness, or life/work balance, or increased joy in 2019, but seek to grow and change—not to become something you’re not already, but to become something that God has already made you. Write your 2019 goals and pursue them, knowing that the deepest part of you has already been changed into a new creation. Because of the gospel, seek to become more of what you already are in 2019. Become more like Jesus, because you are already his new creation.

This Sunday, we are starting a new series called “Every Human Heart.” It’s built on the premise that there are things that every person needs…your spouse, your kids, your roommates, your boss…everyone. There are certain things that every human heart craves. They’re a part of our wiring, and they’re inescapable. We can twist these desires. We can suppress them. And, we can deny them. But they’re always being worked out in one way or another.

Living in the real world in a wise and compassionate way will be a lot easier, the more you understand what the heart wants. It will help you understand yourself better, as well as your spouse, your kids, your boss, your roommates…and the world that we live in. If you want to understand why our government is shut down, or why your folks broke up, or why your friend at school has suddenly turned on you, it has everything to do with what the heart wants. Understanding our need for things like purpose, security, justice and love is really helpful, and that’s what this series is about.

This Sunday, Pastor Tim Prince will be preaching on how every human heart desires Purpose. A new sermon series is a great opportunity to invite a friend to a worship gathering. Pray about who you can invite to come this Sunday.
